Early Age Body Image

Do you remember the first time that you felt fat?

I was 5 years old or so. How that can even be?

When I was in kindergarten and first grade I went to a woman's house for after school child care. I had made friends with a girl that went there and I was bigger than her. I wasn't fat, I was just bigger.

One day it must have been hot, I don't remember all the details but I didn't have a swimsuit. The other girl had two for some reason and the babysitter wanted me to wear her extra one. I remember sobbing that it wouldn't fit me and the babysitter getting fed up with me and spanking me (not the only time).  I remember putting on the too small swimsuit and being miserable.

Isn't it strange how we can remember things that made such an impact on us at an early age? As you can see in the picture above I was no where near fat!

Growing up I was always taller than everyone else. I seemed to grow super fast and then at one point I just stopped growing and then everyone else caught up. This always gave me the idea that I was fat.

Funny how when you look back at pictures you're view point changes. Sheesh I was downright skinny here on my 10th birthday!

I think I was 9 when someone first commented on my weight. I was 11 when I first wrote in my journal that I hated how I looked and I needed to lose weight. When I look back on pictures from those ages, I was very, very misinformed. It's amazing how just a few words or actions from others can shape our lives and bodies for years to come.
